What Do Ghost Ants Look Like?
Ghost ants are extremely small — only 1.3 to 1.5 millimeters long, roughly the size of a period on this page. Their most distinctive feature is their two-toned coloring: a dark brown or black head and thorax paired with a pale, nearly translucent abdomen and legs. This pale coloring is what makes them so hard to see and gives them their name. They move in fast, erratic trails.
Ghost Ant vs. Other Small Ants — How to Tell the Difference
Ghost Ant: 1.3–1.5mm · Dark head + pale/translucent abdomen · Found in: Kitchens, bathrooms, wall voids
Big-Headed Ant: 1.5–3mm · Uniform brown, disproportionately large head on major workers · Found in: Soil, driveways, foundation edges
White-Footed Ant: 2.5–3mm · Black body with pale/white feet · Found in: Exterior walls, trees, inside wall voids
Pharaoh Ant: 1.5–2mm · Pale yellow to light brown, uniform color · Found in: Hospitals, apartments, commercial kitchens
Signs of a Ghost Ant Infestation
- Visible trails of tiny, pale ants along baseboards, countertops, or window sills — especially in kitchens and bathrooms
- Ants congregating around moisture sources: leaky pipes, sinks, pet water bowls, or humid cabinets
- Ants in sweet food containers — sugar, syrups, honey, fruit
- Persistent ant activity even after cleaning and wiping surfaces
- Trail lines running along exterior window frames, plumbing pipes, or electrical conduit entering the home
Ghost Ant Biology & Behavior
Ghost ants (Tapinoma melanocephalum) are a tropical species that thrives in South Florida’s year-round warmth. Per UF IFAS Extension research, ghost ant colonies are polygyne — they contain multiple queens — and polydomous, meaning one colony can maintain multiple nesting sites simultaneously. This is why they appear in multiple rooms at once and why they’re so hard to eliminate.
Workers forage widely for sweet and carbohydrate-rich foods, as well as honeydew produced by aphids and whiteflies on outdoor plants. Ghost ants are closely linked to whitefly infestations — controlling whiteflies on your landscape often reduces ghost ant pressure inside your home.
Why DIY Treatments Make Ghost Ants Worse
This is the most important thing to understand about ghost ants: contact-kill sprays and repellent products cause a process called ‘colony budding.’ When workers detect a repellent chemical, they communicate danger to the colony through pheromones. The colony responds by splitting — new queens are activated and sub-colonies are established in new locations. One infestation becomes three or four. Per UF IFAS Extension, this is the most common reason ghost ant infestations grow after consumer treatment attempts.
How Bugsy’s Eliminates Ghost Ants
Bugsy’s uses non-repellent baiting — the approach recommended by UF IFAS Extension for ghost ant control. Worker ants cannot detect the bait as a threat, so they carry it back to the colony as food. It’s distributed to nestmates including the queens. The entire colony — including all sub-colonies — is eliminated from within over 5–14 days. We apply gel and granular baits in combination, targeting indoor trails, entry points, and exterior nesting sites. A follow-up inspection confirms elimination.
Prevention Tips
- Seal gaps around pipes, windows, and doors where ghost ants enter
- Fix any leaks or moisture issues — ghost ants are heavily attracted to water sources
- Store sugar, honey, syrups, and sweet foods in sealed containers
- Clean pet food bowls daily and don’t leave food out overnight
- Treat whitefly infestations on outdoor shrubs — their honeydew directly feeds ghost ant colonies
Frequently Asked Questions
Are ghost ants dangerous?
Ghost ants don’t bite or sting, but they contaminate food they walk through. Their presence in large numbers — especially in kitchens — creates a food safety concern, and significant infestations indicate a larger underlying pest pressure issue.
Why do I only see ghost ants in my kitchen and bathroom?
Ghost ants are attracted to moisture and sweet food. Kitchens and bathrooms provide both — which is why they concentrate there. The colony itself may be nesting inside wall voids, under flooring, or in the landscaping outside.
How long does ghost ant treatment take?
Non-repellent bait treatments typically reduce visible activity within 5–7 days and achieve full elimination within 2–3 weeks. Because colonies can split and have multiple queens, a follow-up treatment is often recommended.
Do ghost ants come back after treatment?
They can, especially if nesting conditions (moisture, food sources) aren’t corrected. Bugsy’s quarterly pest control plan includes ongoing ghost ant prevention and free retreatments if activity returns between visits.
