How to identify them

House flies are about a quarter inch long, dull gray, with four lengthwise dark stripes on the thorax and reddish eyes. They do not bite. They are strong, active fliers most obvious at windows, doors, and around food and garbage.

Behavior and biology in South Florida

House flies breed in moist, decaying organic material — garbage, pet waste, compost, grass clippings, and spilled food. In Florida’s warmth a generation can complete in as little as a week, so a small sanitation lapse becomes a large population quickly.

The health concern is behavior: flies feed and breed on filth, then land on food and surfaces, transferring bacteria mechanically on their bodies and through regurgitation and droppings. They are linked to the spread of numerous foodborne pathogens.

Signs of an infestation

• Numerous flies at windows, doors, and around trash and food
• Small dark specks (fly droppings) on walls, ceilings, and fixtures
• Maggots in garbage, pet waste, or decaying organic matter
• Persistent flies indoors despite swatting — a sign of a breeding source nearby

House flies are a genuine public-health pest, capable of carrying bacteria that cause foodborne illness from waste to the places people eat. Indoors and in food-handling areas they are both a contamination risk and a serious nuisance.
