How to identify them

Acrobat ants are small and range from light brown to black. Their signature feature is a heart-shaped (valentine) abdomen that they lift up and over the rest of the body when threatened, held aloft as they move — unlike any other common house-invading ant. Up close, the waist has two nodes.

Behavior and biology in South Florida

Acrobat ants typically nest outdoors in trees, stumps, and moist soil, but they readily move into structures — especially wood that has been softened by leaks, or galleries abandoned by termites and carpenter ants. They will also nest in foam insulation and wall voids.

They tend honeydew-producing insects for sugar and will forage indoors for sweets and proteins. When trailing along wires and utility lines into a building, they sometimes strip insulation, and they can deliver a mild bite or sting if handled.

Signs of an infestation

• Small ants with abdomens raised over their bodies along trails
• Ant activity around known leak areas, window frames, or old termite damage
• Bits of foam, wood, and debris (“frass”) pushed from nest openings
• Trails following utility lines and wiring into the structure

Why they are a problem

While acrobat ants do not cause the primary structural damage themselves, their presence often flags a bigger issue: hidden moisture or existing wood damage that drew them in. Indoors they contaminate food and, along wiring, can occasionally cause electrical faults.

Preventing acrobat ants

• Fix roof, plumbing, and A/C leaks that soften wood
• Replace water-damaged wood, trim, and fascia
• Cut back tree limbs and shrubs touching the roof and walls
• Seal gaps where wires, pipes, and cables enter the home
• Keep firewood and lumber off the ground and away from the structure
