Wasps and hornets are among the most common stinging insect complaints in South Florida. Their nests appear under eaves, in soffits, on porch ceilings, in ground, and inside wall voids. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times and release alarm pheromones that recruit other colony members to attack. Professional removal is strongly recommended — disturbing a nest without proper protection can trigger a mass attack.

Stinging Insects Common to South Florida

Paper Wasps (Polistes species)

The most commonly encountered wasp around South Florida homes. Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests made of chewed wood pulp — commonly under eaves, on porch ceilings, around window frames, and in soffits. They’re moderately defensive but will sting repeatedly if the nest is disturbed. Their sting is painful and can cause severe reactions in allergic individuals.

Yellow Jackets (Vespula and Dolichovespula species)

More aggressive than paper wasps and capable of stinging many times. Yellow jackets build enclosed, papery nests — often in the ground, inside wall voids, or in hollow structures. Ground nests in lawns are particularly dangerous for children and pets. Unlike bees, yellow jackets are also attracted to food and drinks at outdoor gatherings.

Bald-Faced Hornets (Dolichovespula maculata)

Build large, football-shaped, enclosed paper nests in trees, bushes, and on building exteriors. Extremely aggressive defenders — will attack anything that approaches the nest. Their sting is considered one of the most painful of any social wasp species.

Mud Daubers

Solitary wasps that build tube-shaped mud nests on walls, under eaves, and in garages. Much less aggressive than social wasps — females rarely sting even when handled. However, their nests can clog HVAC vents and drainage systems.

Never Disturb a Wasp Nest Without Professional Equipment

  • A single defensive wasp can sting 5–10 times; a colony of hundreds or thousands can deliver hundreds of stings
  • Disturbing a ground yellow jacket nest can trigger an attack involving thousands of workers simultaneously
  • Bee or wasp allergy is extremely common — many people don’t know they’re allergic until their first severe reaction
  • Wasp alarm pheromones persist after disturbance — area can remain dangerous for hours

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast can Bugsy’s respond to a wasp nest?

For active nests near entry points, children’s play areas, or high-traffic areas, we do our best to schedule same-day or next-day service. Call (561) 654-8998 for urgent situations.

Will wasps build a new nest in the same location?

If the nesting site remains attractive — an open soffit void, a sheltered eave — new wasps may attempt to nest in subsequent seasons. We treat the area and recommend sealing voids after nest removal to discourage reinfestation.

Are wasps beneficial?

Yes — wasps prey on many garden pest insects and are important pollinators of some plant species. We remove nests that pose a direct safety risk; wasp activity in trees and away from human activity is generally left undisturbed.
