How to identify them

Oriental cockroaches are about an inch long and a very dark, almost black, glossy color. Males have short wings and females essentially none, and neither flies. They move slowly compared with other roaches, and a population often announces itself with a distinctive musty smell.

Oriental roaches are strongly tied to moisture and cooler, damp spaces. They shelter in drains, sewer lines, water-meter boxes, crawlspaces, under mulch and stones, in leaf litter, and around foundations, feeding on decaying organic matter and garbage.

They typically enter buildings at ground level — under doors, through drains, and along utility lines — especially when outdoor conditions dry out or flood. They are considered among the filthier roaches because of the environments they frequent.

Signs of an infestation

• Dark, glossy, slow-moving roaches near drains, garages, and foundations
• A strong musty odor in affected areas
• Activity in damp crawlspaces, around water meters, and under mulch
• Roaches coming up through floor drains or appearing after rain
