Whiteflies have devastated ficus hedges and palm trees throughout South Florida over the past decade. If your ficus hedge is looking sparse, yellowed, or see-through, or if you’re seeing white powdery patches on palm fronds, you have an active whitefly infestation. Without professional treatment, whiteflies can completely defoliate a mature ficus hedge in 4–6 weeks. Per UF IFAS Extension, the most effective treatment is systemic root-zone application — not foliar spraying.
Whitefly Species in South Florida
Ficus Whitefly (Singhiella simplex)
The ficus whitefly feeds exclusively on ficus plants, including ficus benjamina, ficus microcarpa, and related species — the most commonly used privacy hedges in South Florida. Infestations cause rapid leaf drop, turning thick privacy hedges bare in weeks. Adults are tiny (1mm), white, and fly when disturbed — you’ll see a white cloud rise from the hedge when you shake it.
Rugose Spiraling Whitefly (Aleurodicus rugioperculatus)
Identified by distinctive white, waxy spiral deposits on the undersides of fronds and leaves. Attacks coconut palms, areca palms, gumbo limbo, bird of paradise, and many other ornamental plants. Produces large amounts of honeydew that causes black sooty mold on plants, decks, pool areas, and vehicles underneath.
The Whitefly-Ghost Ant Connection
Ghost ants actively farm whitefly colonies for their honeydew secretion. If you have both whitefly pressure outdoors and ghost ants indoors, they’re directly connected. Eliminating the outdoor whitefly infestation reduces the food source driving ghost ants toward your home.
Why Spraying Doesn’t Work
Most pest companies apply monthly foliar sprays to whitefly-infested plants. This approach is ineffective for two reasons: whiteflies develop rapid resistance to foliar insecticides, and foliar spraying kills the natural predators (ladybugs, parasitic wasps, lacewings) that keep whitefly populations in check. Destroying these natural enemies actually accelerates reinfestation.
Bugsy’s Systemic Root-Zone Treatment
Systemic insecticide applied to the root zone is absorbed through the plant’s water transport system, distributing protection to every leaf from a single ground application. Whiteflies feeding on treated leaves die — without harming beneficial insects that don’t feed on the plant itself. One application provides months of protection. We treat quarterly and guarantee results — free retreatments between visits if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my ficus hedge recover after a whitefly infestation?
In most cases, yes — with professional treatment and proper fertilization. Defoliated ficus typically flushes new growth within 6–8 weeks of successful whitefly control. Severely damaged hedges may require a full season to recover full density.
How do I know if I have whiteflies vs. something else on my ficus?
Shake a branch of the affected plant — if a white cloud of tiny insects rises, those are whiteflies. Also check the undersides of leaves for tiny white insects, eggs, or white waxy material. Sooty mold (black coating) on leaves indicates a current or recent infestation.
