South Florida is home to dozens of spider species. Most are completely harmless to humans and play a beneficial role in controlling other insects. However, several species found in Palm Beach and Broward counties can deliver medically significant bites. Knowing how to identify which spiders in your home are dangerous — and which are not — is the first step to managing them safely.

Dangerous Spiders in South Florida

Brown Widow (Latrodectus geometricus)

The brown widow is now more common in South Florida than the black widow, having rapidly expanded its range since the 2000s. It’s tan to dark brown with a distinctive orange or yellow hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen (versus the red hourglass of the black widow). Brown widows prefer sheltered areas: outdoor furniture (especially plastic chairs), mail boxes, garage corners, under eaves, and exterior pots. Their egg sacs are tan and spiky — unmistakable. Brown widow venom is considered more potent than black widow venom, but they inject less venom per bite.

Black Widow (Latrodectus mactans)

The classic black spider with the red hourglass. Less common in urban South Florida than the brown widow but still found in firewood piles, dark corners of garages and sheds, and under outdoor furniture. Bites require immediate medical attention — symptoms include severe muscle cramps, sweating, and nausea.

Common Non-Dangerous Spiders in South Florida

Wolf Spiders (Lycosidae family)

Wolf spiders are large, brown, hairy spiders that hunt on the ground rather than spinning webs. They’re extremely common in South Florida lawns and frequently enter garages and homes in search of prey. Despite their intimidating size (up to 1.5 inches), wolf spiders are not medically dangerous — they rarely bite and their venom causes only minor local irritation.

Banana Spider / Golden Silk Orb-Weaver (Nephila clavipes)

The large, yellow-and-black orb-weaver commonly seen spinning enormous webs in gardens and along walking paths throughout South Florida. Females can reach 3 inches including legs. Completely harmless — their large webs are effective at catching pest insects. Beneficial to leave undisturbed in garden areas away from foot traffic.

Southern House Spider (Kukulcania hibernalis)

Dark brown to black, often mistaken for a brown recluse. They build funnel webs in corners of windows, doors, and garage walls. Not medically significant — they’re actually beneficial, consuming large numbers of household insects.

Signs You Have a Spider Problem

  • Abundant webs in corners, eaves, windows, and garage areas
  • Spiders visible regularly indoors, especially at night
  • Egg sacs attached to walls, furniture, or web structures
  • Large numbers of other insects indoors — spiders follow their food source

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify a brown widow vs. a black widow?

Brown widows are tan to brown with an orange or yellow hourglass (not red). Their egg sacs are tan and covered in pointed spikes — very distinctive. Black widows are glossy black with a red hourglass. If in doubt, don’t handle the spider — call Bugsy’s for a professional identification.

Why do I have so many spiders in my garage?

Garages are prime spider habitat — they’re warm, sheltered, and full of prey insects. The presence of many spiders almost always means there’s a significant food source (other insects) present. Comprehensive pest control that reduces the insect population will reduce spider pressure as a result.

Are wolf spiders dangerous to my children or pets?

Wolf spiders are not considered medically dangerous. Their bite may cause minor pain and local swelling but is not toxic. They rarely bite unless handled or cornered.
