Subterranean termites are the single most destructive pest in South Florida — responsible for more structural damage than any other insect. A colony can contain millions of workers. Formosan subterranean termites, found throughout Palm Beach and Broward counties, can consume over a pound of wood per day. Per UF IFAS Extension, early detection and professional treatment are the only reliable ways to prevent catastrophic structural damage.
How to Identify Subterranean Termites
Mud Tubes
Mud tubes are the most reliable sign of subterranean termite activity. These pencil-width tunnels of soil, sand, and termite secretions protect workers as they travel between the underground colony and wood food sources. Look for them on foundation walls, exposed concrete blocks, plumbing pipes, joists, and garage walls. Finding a mud tube is urgent — treat the same day if possible.
Swarmers & Discarded Wings
Subterranean termite swarms typically occur in spring, after warm weather follows rain. Thousands of winged reproductive termites (alates) emerge simultaneously. Indoor swarms — or piles of discarded wings near windows, sinks, and light fixtures — indicate the colony has been active in or very near your home for at least 3–5 years.
Wood Damage
Subterranean termites eat wood from the inside out, following the grain and leaving a honeycomb pattern of damage packed with soil. Wood that sounds hollow when tapped, or feels spongy underfoot, may have active subterranean termite damage.
Subterranean Termite Species in South Florida
Formosan Termites — The Super Termite
Formosan termites (Coptotermes formosanus) are the most aggressive and destructive subterranean species in Florida. What makes them especially dangerous is their ability to form aerial colonies — building carton (mud-like) nests inside walls, attics, and flat roofs without soil contact. This allows them to bypass traditional soil barrier treatments. A Formosan colony can consume up to 13 ounces of wood per day and cause structural damage in as little as 6 months.
Eastern Subterranean Termites
The most widespread species in the eastern U.S. Colonies are smaller than Formosan (up to 300,000 workers) but still extremely damaging over time. They’re the primary species controlled by bait station programs.
Asian Subterranean Termites
Similar to Formosan termites in behavior and aggressiveness — increasingly common in South Florida, particularly in coastal communities. Requires the same comprehensive treatment approach as Formosan termites.
Treatment Options
- Termite Bait Stations — installed around the home’s perimeter, workers bring bait back to eliminate the colony
- Liquid Termiticide Barrier (Trenching) — creates a continuous chemical barrier in the soil around the foundation
- Termite Pre-Treatment — required by Florida law for new construction; protects foundations before concrete is poured
- Tent Fumigation — for Formosan infestations with aerial colonies, often combined with soil treatment
Frequently Asked Questions
Will tenting my home stop subterranean termites?
No. Tent fumigation kills termites present in the wood at the time of treatment, but the fumigant has no residual — termites can re-enter from the soil the day the tent is removed. Subterranean termites require soil treatment (liquid barrier or bait stations) for effective prevention.
Do I need termite treatment if my home is concrete block?
Yes. Even concrete block homes have wood framing in the attic, interior walls, doors, and floors. Subterranean termites travel through tiny cracks in the foundation slab and through plumbing penetration points to reach this wood.
How do I know if I have Formosan or regular subterranean termites?
Formosan termites typically produce larger swarms with more individuals, and their carton nests may be visible in attics or behind siding. A free inspection from Bugsy’s will identify the species — which matters significantly for treatment selection.
