Silverfish are one of the oldest insects on earth — they’ve existed virtually unchanged for over 400 million years. In South Florida’s humid climate, they’re a common household pest, particularly in bathrooms, kitchens, attics, and storage areas. They’re not dangerous to humans, but they cause significant damage to books, paper, clothing, and stored items over time.
Silverfish Identification
Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) are 1/2 to 3/4 inch long, teardrop-shaped insects covered in shiny, silver-gray scales — giving them a fish-like appearance and a distinctive wriggling, fish-like movement. They have three long tail appendages and two antennae. They’re fast runners but cannot climb smooth surfaces. Silverfish are nocturnal and flee when exposed to light.
What Silverfish Eat & Damage
Silverfish feed on carbohydrates, starches, and proteins — which includes a surprisingly wide range of household items:
- Paper, books, magazines, cardboard boxes, and document storage
- Wallpaper paste and wallpaper itself
- Clothing, fabrics, and textiles — especially cotton, linen, and silk
- Pantry items: oats, cereals, flour, and pasta
- Photographs and art on paper
- Glue in book bindings and envelope adhesive
What Attracts Silverfish to Your Home
Silverfish require high humidity — ideally above 75% relative humidity — to thrive. South Florida provides this naturally. They’re most commonly found in bathrooms, under sinks, in attics with poor ventilation, and in storage areas containing paper or fabric. Per UF IFAS Extension, reducing indoor humidity through air conditioning and fixing moisture sources is the most effective cultural control for silverfish in Florida.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are silverfish harmful to humans?
No. Silverfish don’t bite, sting, or transmit disease. The damage is entirely to household items. However, large populations can cause significant long-term damage to books, clothing, and paper items.
Why am I finding silverfish in my bathtub?
Silverfish fall into bathtubs while searching for water and can’t climb out of the smooth surfaces. Finding them in the tub is a common first sign of a silverfish population living in nearby wall voids or under bathroom flooring.
Do silverfish live in attics?
Yes — this is one of the most common locations in South Florida. Attic insulation retains moisture and the enclosed space maintains the humidity silverfish require. In attics, they feed on insulation paper backing and any stored cardboard or fabric.
