South Florida’s warm, humid climate means fleas never truly go dormant. Unlike northern states where winter breaks the flea cycle, South Florida flea populations remain active and breeding year-round. A single flea can produce 50 eggs per day — a small problem becomes a major infestation within weeks. Per UF IFAS Extension, the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is responsible for the vast majority of flea infestations in Florida, despite its name affecting both cats and dogs.

Flea Identification

Fleas are tiny (1–2mm), dark brown, wingless insects with extremely flat, hard bodies and powerful hind legs built for jumping. They can jump 150 times their body length — about 12 inches vertically. Their flat body and hard exoskeleton make them very difficult to crush.

Signs of a Flea Infestation

  • Pets scratching, biting at their skin, or excessively grooming — especially around the neck, base of tail, and belly
  • Tiny jumping insects visible in carpet, on pet bedding, or on white socks walked through the house
  • Flea dirt (feces) — tiny black specks in pet fur or bedding that turn reddish-brown when wet (it’s digested blood)
  • Red, itchy bite marks in clusters or lines on human ankles and lower legs
  • Pets appearing restless, irritable, or losing patches of fur from excessive scratching

The Flea Life Cycle — Why Treatment Fails Without IGRs

Fleas have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa (cocoon), and adult. The pupa stage is critical: pupae are encased in a cocoon that is completely impervious to all insecticides. Adult fleas account for only 5% of the total flea population in an infested home — the other 95% are eggs, larvae, and pupae throughout carpets and furniture. Consumer products that kill only adults miss 95% of the infestation. Professional treatment combines an adulticide with an IGR (insect growth regulator) that prevents larvae from developing into reproductive adults, breaking the cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

My pet is on flea prevention but I still have fleas — why?

Pet flea preventatives protect the pet, not the home. Flea eggs, larvae, and pupae in your carpets and furniture will continue hatching new adults regardless of what the pet is on. The home and the pet must both be treated simultaneously.

Can I get fleas if I don’t have pets?

Yes. Fleas can be brought in on clothing or enter from wildlife (opossums, squirrels, stray cats) that pass through your yard. Moving into a home with a prior history of pets can result in flea pupae hatching months after the previous pet moved out.

How long after flea treatment will I still see fleas?

Pupae already in your carpet at the time of treatment will continue to hatch for 2–3 weeks. Seeing fleas for up to 2 weeks after professional treatment is normal — the follow-up treatment handles these newly emerged adults.
