Red imported fire ants are one of the most aggressive and widely distributed pest species in Florida. Their mounds appear suddenly across lawns after rain, and accidentally disturbing one triggers a coordinated mass attack. Their stings are intensely painful and can cause serious allergic reactions in sensitive individuals — including children and pets. Florida Department of Agriculture lists fire ants as a significant public health pest throughout the state.

How to Identify Fire Ants

Red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) are reddish-brown to dark brown, ranging from 1/8 to 1/4 inch in length. Unlike most ant species, fire ant workers vary significantly in size within the same colony — you’ll see both small workers and larger ‘major’ workers. Their mounds are irregular, dome-shaped mounds of loose soil with no visible entrance hole at the top (fire ants enter from underground tunnels around the base).

Fire Ant Mounds — What You’re Looking At

A fire ant mound is not a nest — it’s a heat management structure. The actual colony lives underground, with tunnels extending several feet deep and 20+ feet sideways. A large colony can contain 200,000–500,000 workers. The visible mound is used to regulate temperature, and ants will rapidly move up into it when the soil is disturbed — which is why stepping near a mound triggers immediate swarming of the surface.

Fire Ant Sting — What to Do

  • Move away from the mound immediately and brush ants off your skin — don’t crush them, which releases alarm pheromones attracting more ants
  • Wash the sting area with soap and water
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and pain
  • Watch for signs of allergic reaction: swelling beyond the sting site, difficulty breathing, dizziness — seek emergency care immediately if these occur
  • Fire ant stings typically produce a white pustule at the site within 24 hours — do not pop them, as this increases infection risk

Why Mound Treatment Doesn’t Work

Individual mound treatment — pouring liquid insecticide into the mound — is one of the most common and least effective approaches. It kills workers in the mound but the queen, located much deeper underground, survives and rebuilds the colony. According to UF IFAS Extension, individual mound treatments reduce colony counts by only about 20–30%, and the surviving colonies simply relocate to new areas of your lawn.

The Right Approach: Broadcast Bait

Broadcast bait distributed evenly across the entire lawn delivers results 80–90% better than mound treatment. Worker ants forage widely and find the bait granules, carrying them back to the colony as food. The bait is distributed to nestmates including the queen, preventing reproduction and causing the colony to die out naturally over 4–6 weeks — without relocation.

Prevention Tips

  • Avoid disturbing mounds — if you find new ones, contact Bugsy’s rather than attempting DIY treatment
  • Keep grass healthy and dense — thin turf is more susceptible to fire ant colonization
  • Don’t leave pet food bowls outdoors — they attract fire ants seeking food
  • Schedule quarterly broadcast bait maintenance to prevent new colonies from establishing

Frequently Asked Questions

Are fire ants dangerous to pets?

Yes. Pets that paw at or step on fire ant mounds receive multiple simultaneous stings. Cats and dogs can have severe allergic reactions. Keep pets away from fire ant mounds and seek veterinary care if stings occur.

How do I know if I’m allergic to fire ants?

If you experience swelling beyond the immediate sting area, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or rapid heartbeat after a sting, you may be having an allergic reaction. Seek emergency medical care immediately. People with known bee or wasp allergies are more likely to have fire ant allergies.

Do fire ants come inside homes?

Occasionally, especially during heavy rain when their underground nests flood. They may also follow plumbing and electrical conduit into homes. Indoor fire ant activity warrants an immediate professional inspection.
