Fire ants are one of the most aggressive and painful pest problems facing South Florida homeowners. Their mounds appear suddenly after rain, and a single disturbance triggers a mass attack — their stings are painful and can cause serious allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Florida Department of Agriculture reports classify red imported fire ants as one of the most problematic invasive pests in Florida, with populations active throughout Palm Beach and Broward counties year-round.

Why Mound Treatment Alone Doesn’t Work

Treating individual fire ant mounds with contact insecticide is a common and ineffective approach. When a colony detects a threat, it responds by producing new queens and relocating the colony to nearby areas. Per UF IFAS Extension, individual mound treatments reduce visible mound counts by only about 20–30% — and the surviving colonies spread further across your property.

The same pattern repeats with liquid drenches poured into mounds — they kill the workers in the mound at the surface but the queen, who is much deeper, survives and rebuilds. Most homeowners end up repeatedly treating the same property with minimal long-term improvement.

The Right Approach: Broadcast Bait Treatment

Broadcast bait application is the scientifically validated approach for fire ant control. Per UF IFAS research, broadcast bait applied uniformly across the entire lawn reduces fire ant populations by 80–90% — dramatically better than mound-by-mound treatment.

Here’s how it works: foraging worker ants find the bait granules and carry them back to the colony as food. The bait is distributed to nestmates including the queen. The active ingredient prevents the queen from reproducing, causing the colony to die out naturally over 4–6 weeks without colony relocation or splitting.

Our Fire Ant Broadcast Treatment

Property-Wide Coverage

We apply granular bait uniformly across your entire lawn using a calibrated spreader — not just to visible mounds. This is critical because fire ant colonies forage widely and most of a colony’s workers are not at the mound surface at any given time.

Timing & Follow-Up

Bait must be fresh and applied when ants are actively foraging — during mild weather, morning or evening. Bugsy’s technicians time applications for maximum ant activity. A follow-up inspection 4–6 weeks after treatment confirms colony reduction. Retreatment is included at no charge if needed.

Quarterly Maintenance Program

South Florida’s warm climate means new fire ant colonies can establish from surrounding properties throughout the year. We recommend quarterly fire ant maintenance as part of our complete lawn insect control program to maintain long-term suppression across your property.

Fire Ant Safety for Children & Pets

Fire ant stings are a genuine medical concern. Children playing in the yard and pets that step on mounds are at highest risk. For individuals with known fire ant allergies, even a single sting can be life-threatening. Bugsy’s quarterly fire ant program is one of the most important safety investments a South Florida homeowner can make — especially for families with young children or outdoor pets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does broadcast bait treatment take to work?

Broadcast bait is slower than contact insecticides by design — worker ants must find it, carry it back, and distribute it through the colony. Expect 4–6 weeks for significant mound reduction. The results are far more complete and long-lasting than faster contact treatments.

Is the bait safe for my pets and children?

Yes. Fire ant bait granules are applied at very low rates (1–2 lbs per acre) and are formulated to attract fire ants specifically. The active ingredient is safe for people and pets at the application rates used. We advise keeping pets off the treated area for 24 hours after application.

Why do I still have fire ants after treating mounds myself?

Individual mound treatment causes colony relocation rather than elimination. The queen survives and rebuilds nearby. Broadcast bait reaches the entire colony through the workers’ natural foraging behavior — this is why it works when mound treatment doesn’t.
