South Florida’s warm, humid climate creates near-perfect conditions for lawn-destroying insects year-round. Chinch bugs can kill an entire lawn in weeks during summer. Fall armyworms can strip a lawn bare in days. Grub worms destroy root systems silently underground. Most homeowners don’t notice the damage until it’s severe. Bugsy’s professional lawn insect control program identifies and eliminates these threats before they cause irreversible damage.

According to Florida Department of Agriculture pest alerts, South Florida experiences higher insect pressure than virtually any other region in the country due to the absence of a true winter. Year-round monitoring and professional treatment is essential.

Lawn Insects We Treat

Chinch Bugs

Chinch bugs are the #1 lawn pest in South Florida, particularly devastating to St. Augustine grass. They inject a toxin as they feed that blocks water transport in grass blades, causing irregular yellow and brown patches that spread rapidly in hot, dry conditions. Per UF IFAS chinch bug research, populations can reach 20–30 bugs per square foot in severe infestations. Early detection and fast treatment are critical — damage becomes permanent within days of first appearance.

Sod Webworms

Sod webworm larvae feed on grass blades at night, leaving irregular brown patches that appear to have been mowed close to the soil. They’re most active from spring through fall and produce multiple generations per year in South Florida’s warm climate. A simple tug test reveals loose, easily-lifted turf over active webworm populations.

Fall Armyworms

Fall armyworms migrate into South Florida lawns in late summer and early fall, consuming large swaths of turf in a matter of days. They feed voraciously — a single armyworm can consume an entire grass blade in hours. When populations are high, entire lawns can be stripped bare within a week. Rapid response treatment is critical when armyworms are spotted.

Grub Worms (White Grubs)

Grub worms are the larvae of several beetle species, including the Southern masked chafer and the Japanese beetle. They feed on grass roots underground, causing turf to wilt and lift easily from the soil. Grub damage is often mistaken for drought stress until the turf can be peeled back like a carpet. Preventive treatment in spring is far more effective than curative treatment after damage appears.

Mole Crickets

Mole crickets tunnel through soil and sever grass roots, causing raised tunnels visible at the soil surface and spongy, lifting turf. Bahia grass lawns in South Florida’s larger properties are most commonly affected, but St. Augustine lawns can also be heavily damaged. Spring baiting when mole crickets are in early nymph stage is the most effective treatment timing.

Hunting Billbugs

Hunting billbugs are an emerging lawn pest in South Florida, causing damage similar to grub worms. Adults feed on grass stems at the soil surface while larvae feed on roots. Zoysia grass is particularly susceptible.

Our Lawn Insect Treatment Process

Free Lawn Inspection

We perform a detailed inspection of your turf, looking for damage patterns, testing pull strength, and conducting a soap flush test to reveal hidden insect populations. Identifying the specific insect is critical — the right treatment for chinch bugs is different from the right treatment for grubs.

Targeted Granular & Liquid Applications

We apply professional-grade granular or liquid insecticides calibrated to the specific pest and infestation level. Per EPA Integrated Pest Management principles, we use the minimum effective rate to protect beneficial insects while eliminating the target pest.

Follow-Up Monitoring

All Bugsy’s lawn insect treatments include free follow-up visits if pest activity continues after the initial treatment. Your lawn’s recovery is our responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have chinch bugs?

Chinch bug damage appears as irregular yellowing patches in sunny, dry areas of St. Augustine grass — often near the edges of the lawn first. Parting the grass blades at the edge of a damaged area and looking closely in bright light often reveals the tiny (1/8-inch) black-and-white insects. A soap flush test (dish soap diluted in water poured over a 2-square-foot area) forces chinch bugs to the surface.

What does armyworm damage look like?

Armyworm damage appears as rapidly expanding brown patches that look like the turf was shaved off close to the soil. You’ll often see green pellet-like frass at the soil surface. Birds feeding intensively on your lawn is another warning sign — they’re eating the caterpillars.

Can lawn insects come back after treatment?

Yes — South Florida’s climate means new pest pressure arrives continually. Our monthly or bi-monthly service plans include regular insect monitoring and retreatment at no extra charge if activity returns between visits.

Is lawn insect treatment safe for my pets?

Yes. We use EPA-registered products and advise an appropriate re-entry interval — typically 1–2 hours after drying. We’ll always specify the re-entry time for each product applied.
