South Florida’s warm climate and year-round growing season mean weeds never truly go away. Dollar weed spreads through overwatered lawns. Crabgrass invades thin spots after summer rains. Sedge (often confused with grass) resists most herbicides and requires specialized treatment. Bugsy’s weed control program targets every weed type with the right product at the right time — protecting your turf without damaging the grass around it.

Per UF IFAS weed control guidance, the most effective weed management combines cultural practices (proper mowing, irrigation, and fertilization) with targeted pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide applications. Bugsy’s integrates both into every lawn care visit.

Common Weeds in South Florida Lawns

Dollar Weed (Hydrocotyle spp.)

Dollar weed is the most common lawn weed in South Florida, thriving in wet, overwatered areas. It spreads rapidly through rhizomes and is resistant to many consumer herbicides. Professional post-emergent treatment combined with irrigation adjustment delivers the best results.

Sedge (Nutsedge & Kyllinga)

Sedge looks like grass but grows faster and lighter. It requires specific sedge-selective herbicides — general broadleaf products won’t touch it. Purple nutsedge, green kyllinga, and globe sedge are all active throughout Palm Beach and Broward counties.

Crabgrass & Dallisgrass

Summer annual grassy weeds that explode during the rainy season in thin or stressed turf areas. Pre-emergent applications in late winter and early spring are the primary tool — once crabgrass is established, control is much harder.

Broadleaf Weeds

Florida betony, spurge, chamberbitter, and Florida pusley are common broadleaf weeds that invade South Florida lawns. Post-emergent broadleaf herbicides applied during the growing season provide control without harming St. Augustine or Zoysia turf.

Virginia Buttonweed

One of the most difficult weeds in South Florida. Virginia buttonweed spreads through stem fragments and seeds, requiring multiple applications of professional-grade herbicide to fully suppress. Many consumer products have little effect.

Pre-Emergent vs. Post-Emergent Weed Control

Pre-Emergent Treatment

Applied before weed seeds germinate, pre-emergent herbicides create a chemical barrier in the soil that prevents seedling emergence. Timing is critical — UF IFAS recommends pre-emergent application in late winter (January–February) to target crabgrass and other summer annuals before soil temperatures rise.

Post-Emergent Treatment

Post-emergent herbicides are applied directly to actively growing weeds. We use selective post-emergent products that target the specific weed type without harming your turfgrass. Per EPA guidelines, selectivity and calibration are essential — incorrect products can cause severe turf damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my lawn have so many weeds?

Weeds fill weak, thin, or stressed areas of turf. The underlying cause is usually incorrect mowing height, over- or under-irrigation, nutrient deficiency, or insect damage that has thinned the turf. Our free lawn inspection identifies the root cause — we treat both the weeds and the conditions allowing them to grow.

How quickly does weed control work?

Post-emergent herbicides typically show visible results within 7–14 days. Pre-emergent treatments prevent new germination, so results are measured by what doesn’t grow rather than visible die-off. Repeat applications are often needed for established perennial weeds like nutsedge.

Will weed control hurt my St. Augustine grass?

Not when applied correctly. We use turf-selective herbicides calibrated to your grass type. St. Augustine is sensitive to certain herbicides — our technicians select products specifically labeled for safe use on St. Augustine turf.
