South Florida’s sandy, nutrient-poor soils mean your lawn won’t stay green on its own. Regular professional fertilization is the foundation of any healthy lawn program. But fertilizing incorrectly — using the wrong nutrients at the wrong time — can burn your turf, trigger disease, and contribute to stormwater pollution. Bugsy’s lawn fertilization programs are formulated specifically for South Florida’s soil chemistry and calibrated to each grass type we treat.

Our technicians follow UF IFAS lawn fertilization guidelines and hold Limited Urban Commercial Fertilizer Applicator certifications as required by the Florida DEP. Every application is calibrated for your lawn’s specific needs — not a generic formula applied to every yard on the street.

Why South Florida Lawns Need Professional Fertilization

  • Sandy soils in Palm Beach and Broward counties have very low nutrient-holding capacity — nutrients leach quickly with irrigation and rain
  • St. Augustine grass, the most common South Florida turf, requires specific nitrogen ratios to avoid both deficiency and disease
  • Fertilizer applied during the summer rainy season can burn turf or trigger gray leaf spot fungal outbreaks if timing is wrong
  • Many South Florida counties have fertilizer blackout periods (June 1–Sept 30) requiring specific slow-release formulations
  • Salt-enriched coastal soils near Pompano Beach, Boca Raton, and Jupiter create additional micronutrient imbalances

What We Apply & When

Granular Fertilization

We apply slow-release granular fertilizer calibrated to your grass type and soil conditions. Granular applications provide sustained nutrition over 60–90 days, reducing the frequency needed to maintain color and density.

Liquid Fertilization

Liquid fertilization delivers micronutrients directly to the leaf blade for rapid uptake. This is particularly effective for iron and magnesium supplementation — the most common deficiencies in South Florida’s sandy, high-pH soils that cause yellowing and pale color.

Seasonal Timing

Per UF IFAS guidelines, fertilization timing in South Florida is divided by season. During the dry season (November–April), we build root reserves with well-timed applications. During the early rainy season (May–June), we support vigorous growth. We pause or switch to low-nitrogen formulations during peak summer to comply with blackout rules and reduce fungal disease risk.

Grass-Specific Fertilization Programs

St. Augustine Grass

Requires nitrogen-rich programs during growing season with careful timing to avoid gray leaf spot. Iron supplementation is often needed in high-pH coastal soils to maintain deep green color.

Zoysia Grass

Lower nitrogen needs than St. Augustine. We focus on potassium and iron for stress tolerance and color. Over-fertilizing Zoysia causes thatch build-up and fungal disease.

Bermuda Grass

High nitrogen requirements during peak growing season. Bermuda responds dramatically to proper fertilization — rapid, dense growth that crowds out weeds.

Bahia Grass

Low-input grass requiring minimal fertilization but benefiting from annual soil testing and targeted micronutrient correction.

Fertilization + Integrated Lawn Care

Fertilization alone won’t solve a lawn problem caused by insects or disease. Our lawn fertilization program works best as part of our complete lawn care program, which combines fertilization with weed control, insect control, and fungus control for a fully integrated approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does my lawn need fertilization in South Florida?

Most South Florida lawns benefit from fertilization every 6–8 weeks during the growing season and every 10–12 weeks during the dry season. The exact schedule depends on grass type, soil conditions, and whether you’re on city water (which often contains enough phosphorus to adjust fertilization needs).

What is the fertilizer blackout period in South Florida?

Many Palm Beach and Broward county municipalities restrict the application of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers from June 1 through September 30 to reduce stormwater runoff. Bugsy’s technicians are certified and follow all local blackout rules — we’ll never apply prohibited products during restricted periods.

My lawn is yellow — does it need fertilizer?

Yellowing can be caused by iron deficiency (very common in South Florida’s high-pH soils), nitrogen deficiency, overwatering, underwatering, or fungal disease. A free lawn inspection will identify the cause before we recommend any treatment.

Is your fertilizer safe for my pets?

Yes. We use EPA-registered products with residential pet-safe formulations. We ask that pets stay off treated areas until the product has dried — usually 1–2 hours.
